About
Architects are involved with the design and construction of buildings and the space within the site surrounding such buildings, which have as their principal purpose human occupancy or habitation.
Applicants for registration must:
- Complete a degree in architecture or an architecture-related field approved by the Board
- Obtain three (3) to seven (7) years of architectural experience satisfactory to the Board (the duration depending on the type of degree obtained),
- Complete the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)/Intern Development Program (IDP).” administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), [exam applicants only] and
- Pass the Architect Registration Examination.

Exam Application Fee: $30
Comity Application/Reapplication Fee: $55
Biennial Registration/Renewal Fee: $140
Late Renewal Penalty Fee: $10 (per month or fraction of a month for six months following registration expiration date)
Duplicate Wall Certificate: $25
Additional
Comity applicants (applicants registered in another jurisdiction) must hold an unexpired NCARB certificate and must be currently registered in at least one other jurisdiction. The Board may issue a certificate of registration as an architect to any person whose qualifications do not meet the requirements of the laws and the rules if that person is currently registered in another jurisdiction and holds an unexpired NCARB certificate.
Individuals who are reapplying must have been previously registered in Tennessee. Individuals that have been expired for less than 5 years must provide either proof of completion of 24 PDHs, all of which must be in healthy, safety, and welfare subjects, completed within the 2 years preceding the date of reapplication -OR- proof of an active out of state license. Individuals that have been expired for more than 5 years must provide either proof of completion of 24 PDHs, all of which must be in healthy, safety, and welfare subjects, completed within the 2 years preceding the date of reapplication -OR- proof of an active out of state license -AND- 5 references.

Grace Period
The grace period for your license is 6 months. When you renew during the grace you are charged a late fee of $10 per month.
After grace period, yet still within 4 years of expiration, applicant is only required to provide either proof of 24 PDHS or an active out of state license. If more than 4 years since expiration, then 5 references are additionally required.
Continuing Education: How many education hours do I need?
24 PDHs are required to be completed prior to license renewal. Evidence of these PDHs is not required to be submitted unless audited by the Board.
How do I check status of my education?
Registrants are required to maintain records of their continuing education for a minimum of 4 years after the date of the program or activity.
Change of Address
Rule 0120-1-.27 of the Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners states that a registrant or applicant for registration shall notify the Board in writing within 30 days of any change in mailing address. Reporting address changes is your personal responsibility. Address changes can be completed online.
