Land Surveyor

About

Land Surveyor means a person who is engaged in the practice of land surveying.

Practice of land surveying means any service of work, the adequate performance of which involves the application of special knowledge of the principles of mathematics, the related physical and applied sciences and the relevant requirements of law for adequate evidence to the act of measuring and locating lines, angles, elevations, natural and man-made features in the air, on the surface of the earth, within underground workings and on the beds of bodies of water for the purpose of determining areas and volumes, for the monumenting of property boundaries and for the platting and layout of lands and subdivisions of land, including the topography, drainage, alignment and grades of streets, and for the preparation and perpetuation of maps, records, plats, field notes, records and property descriptions that represent these surveys.

 

Requirements

Professional Land-Surveyor-in-Training (PLSIT) and Professional Land Surveyor applicants must indicate the pathway in which they are seeking licensure in accordance with current requirements. The five pathways can be reviewed here.

You are required to submit the following with your Professional Land-Surveyor-in-Training (PLSIT) application:

  1. A $25 application licensure fee
  2. Proof of education: A copy of a high school diploma, GED, or college diploma OR official transcripts. If applying via education methods 2-4, must provide the course reporting form. If applying via education methods 4 & 5, must provide the Experience Verification Form (must be sent in directly by the Land Surveyor who is verifying the experience).
  3. Proof of exam: Proof of passage of the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam.
  4. Three character references, one being a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS). This form must be completed and sent to the Board directly by the reference via email at Land.Surveyors@TN.Gov.

You are required to submit the following with your Professional Land Surveyor license application:

  1. $300 fee ($200 application fee, $100 registration fee)
  2. Five character references, three being from Professional Land Surveyors (PLS). This form must be completed and sent to the Board directly by the reference via email at Land.Surveyors@TN.Gov.
  3. Proof of education: A copy of a high school diploma, GED, or college diploma OR official transcripts. Applicants applying via education method (v) must provide the course reporting form.
  4. Proof of exams: Proof of passage of both the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) Exam and the Tennessee Specific Surveying exam (TS).
  5. Proof of experience for the pathway in which they are seeking licensure by providing the Experience Verification Form (must be sent in directly by the Land Surveyor who is verifying the experience).
  6. Two boundary survey plats with descriptions, along with a separate detailed narrative of the applicant’s role in the performance and production of the two sample plats.
  7. Out of state verification of licensure/examination, if applicable.

Principles of Surveying Examination:  $150
Tennessee Specifics Examination:  $150
Renewal Fee:  $280
Monthly Late Penalty:  $20

The mission of the Tennessee Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors is to serve the citizens of Tennessee by efficiently and effectively providing a fair, flexible, and positive regulatory environment for consumer service industries.

Grace Period:

The grace period for your license is 1 year. When you renew during the grace period you are charged a late fee of $20 per month.

After the grace period, registrants are required to reinstate/reapply and fulfill all requirements for initial licensure. Reinstatement applications can be submitted online.

Continuing Education: How many education hours do I need?

30 PDH hours - 2 of those hours being in ethics & standards of practice

Continuing Education: How do I check status of my education?

Registrants are required to maintain records of their continuing education.

Individuals

Reporting address changes (home, business, or mailing) is your personal responsibility. Address changes can be completed online.
