Certified Trainer License

About

A state certified trainer licensed by the Private Protective Services program is an individual certified by the commissioner to administer and certify as to successful completion of the minimum training requirements prescribed for a security officer/guard.  A certified trainer may appoint an instructor to assist with the implementation of the training program by notifying the commissioner of the appointee. Only a certified trainer is eligible to certify successful completion of required training of a security guard/officer before the guard can be registered. Registration is required of armed or unarmed security guards/officers in Tennessee.

Requirements

  • Completion and submission of an application.
  • Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Be personally qualified to conduct the required training of security officers/guards.
  • Have at least one year of supervisory experience satisfactory to the commissioner with a Contract security company, Proprietary security organization, (OR) Any public law enforcement agency in the United States (including military).

Upon application applicants must provide:

  • List any affiliation with a contract security company or proprietary security organization.
  • The classifications of training that the applicant desires to administer: Unarmed general training; Firearms training; Baton training; Chemical spray training; and/or Stun gun training;
  • A resume outlining the education and experience of the applicant, including descriptions of all employment or occupations engaged in during the immediate past five (5) years;
  • Evidence of qualifications to conduct the training, such as: instructor’s certificate issued by Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission; instructor’s certificate issued by any law enforcement agency; instructor’s certificate issued by the National Rifle Association;
  • For each type of nonlethal weapons training which the applicant desires to provide, a certificate showing that the applicant has completed a course in the instruction of persons in the proper use of the nonlethal weapon and the liabilities associated with its use; and/or a notarized statement that the applicant has, for at least one (1) year prior to November 1, 1996, provided training to security guard/officers or law enforcement officers in the proper use of the nonlethal weapon and the liabilities associated with its use.
  • The name and qualifications of any instructor whom the applicant intends to appoint to assist in the implementation of the training program.

Additional

Renewal
License must be renewed every two (2) years.

Continuing Education
Twelve (12) hours of continuing professional education is now required as a prerequisite for renewal of Trainer Certifications.

Trainer License Information Responsibilities
A trainer shall notify the Commissioner in writing within ten (10) days of any material change in information furnished in connection with an application for certification.

If the Commissioner determines that an applicant for certification as a trainer is qualified to conduct only one (1) type of training permitted by this rule, the Commissioner shall limit the terms of the trainer’s certificate accordingly.

Any instructor assisting in the implementation of a training program shall be under the supervision and control of the certified trainer by which he was appointed. The certified trainer shall be accountable for the performance of each instructor appointed.

Any certified trainer appointing an instructor shall at the time of such appointment submit to the Commissioner documentation that the instructor meets the requirements of T.C.A. §62-35-126(c).

Grace Period
The grace period is 90 days. The late fee is $20 each month within grace period.

After grace period must submit reinstatement request. Then will be notified with steps needed to reapply for license.
